affiliative humor
Affiliative humor consists of nonhostile jokes, amusing comments, and lighthearted humor. In this case, it helps further one's social relationships, and reduce interpersonal conflict. An active factor against this humor style is having a greater intolerance, this means that it is more difficult for the individual to act in a spontaneous, care free, and playful manner. It is expected that those who have a greater amount of intolerance may have a suppression effect on the use and positive affect of affiliative humor. (Kuiper, Klein, Vertes et al. 545).
Higher levels of affiliative humor is associated with higher levels of self-esteem and lower levels of anxiety and depression (Maiolino, Kuiper 558). A study that was done focused on possible relationships between positive psychology constructs of gratitude and savoring, and each of the 4 humor styles. It was expected for higher levels of trait gratitude to be linked to the use of two adaptive humor styles, affiliative and self-enhancing humor. In futherance, the more an individual showed gratitude towards positive things, the more enjoyable experiences became. People who have greater levels of trait gratitude are less likely to use maladaptive humor styles such as slef-defeating and aggressive humor (Maiolino, Kuiper 559).
In the study that was done, higher levels of gratitude was associated with affiliative humor and self-enhancing, while lower levels of gratitude was associated with self-defeating and aggressive humor. It was also shown that higher levels of savoring was also associated with affiliative humor (Maiolino, Kuiper 562).
